Is Kathysue going to go "Rustic?!"

I have never considered my self a rustic girl or even a girl that needs a lot of texture in rooms. I do, however, like a few rustic pieces and would love to incorporate them in my home.

I have three items that I have always been drawn too that I never have purchased for my home, but they are always in my radar.

First, are Confit pots in pretty gold or green. I have always loved these. I also have admired the French Anduze pottery.

anduze pottery (442x442)
I think my mantel could accomodate a pair of any of these lovely pots, don’t you? I really love the pretty yellow/ochre pots. I think they could be a wonderful addition of texture to a room.

Hmmmm? Maybe a pair of lamps?!!

I have mentioned this next element as something I would like to add to my home in 2011. I am bound and determined to find just the right one.

1 (800x452)
I love the idea of a large basket for a coffee table. Not a new idea, but still a good use for a large basket. It is also wonderful for storage, which is a whole other issue in my home.

4 (300x300)

My next item is a dough bowl. I have always been drawn to the patina of these old wooden bowls. My grandmother and great-grandmother use to make their own bread and I can just visualize them making dough in a bowl similar to these bowls.

There are so many of you that love the rustic look that is so popular right now. You love burlap and the roughed up paint finishes, so it would not be a surprise to see these pieces in your homes.

In my home, however, I think it might be a bit of the unexpected and I like that!!

I don’t think most people that really know me would associate the word "rustic'  with  me.

I usually love an understated elegant look. I think the addition of these pieces would give me some nice texture, and more of a casual feel in my home, don’t you?

Do you have elements that you are attracted too that would not necessarily be found in your style of decor? What are they? Do you see yourself ever incorporating something that is, "outside the box?"

Stepping out of your comfort zone and adding something unexpected to your home decor.

I don't use a lot of baskets in my design, but I do have a large one quite similar to the one you've shown. It's in the great room in our Hamptons home to store toys for my children. It's nice to pull toys out and play and then to toss them back in.

I agree with your choices, Kathysue. I love the pots, and baskets are a real weakness with me! The dough bowl is fabulous and I am wishing I had my great-grandmother's bowl right now! Linda

When we were having our home built rustic old world was my style and inspired many of the permanent choices I made in our home, like choosing stained wood cabinets instead of white ones in the kitchen. While my style is changing I do love the texture you mentioned that is part of the rustic look.

I have an antique batea in my living room that is quite similar to your dough bowl. Love it!

Emily A Clark did a recent blog post on dough trays and bowls and I believe I saw a series on the Nesting Place blog as well, just recently. The Windward Tray and Bowl at the Country Door website was mentioned as a reasonable source and item; Pottery Barn has some. I think dough trays have wonderful possibilities for decorating year-round.

I love natural, rustic elements in my otherwise transitional decor. Target has some great woven chests and also wooden bowls like you pictured above. Great prices!

Love your blog!

I love the unexpected, Kathysue.

I have had a love affair with baskets for many years and have a few antique handbaskets as well as a some made by Missouri artisans. I too am looking for a large basket. It's part of my little vision for the foyer.

That's some pretty classy "rustic"! I think items that have a story can always find a spot in our homes. Great choices all around, KS!

You know me, I love rustic Kathysue. So glad you are liking it too. Confit pots? Yes! Baskets as coffee tables? Yes! Anduze pots? Absolutely! I have managed to collect a few of those things and truly love them. They do add just the right amount of texture to the room. I can see confit pots in your kitchen, and the anduze pots by your fireplace. The Hillsborough Antique show is tomorrow and there is a dealer there who has lots of pots.
Remember that basket sofa table we saw at ZGallerie? Go for it! xo Delores

Do it do it! Love all of the items you featured! I have been looking for just the right confit pots for my living room! I adore them and need a little "rustic" in there!

I can't believe you and Delores have been shopping together...I am sooooo jealous! I adore you both!

Hi Kathysue,

I really like all the things you showed us today. I think I got a bad impression of what people called "country" back in the 80s. More and more I'm now drawn to things that look timeworn and un-shiny. Now I live in a house that has a walk-out basement with recycled exposed beams and old brick. It's the perfect place to display things that are a little bit rustic.

Hope you have a very happy Valentine's Day!

Has anyone seen or purchased Crate and Barrel's Butari tray (a modern rendition of the dough trench)? I have seen it at C and B and it did seem rustic to me, impressive, but would love to know if anyone actually has bought it and what they think.

Love all your picks and the beautiful accompanying images!! I think they would all look terribly chic in your home! I have several old dough bowls that we use to serve salad!

I love the addition of a few rustic accents - it adds a comfy casualness to a room and your examples are classic! As for me, I'm drawn to many of the graphic wallpapers but know that as much as I love them, I'll never do wallpaper again! Perhaps introducing some cushions in graphic patterns would satisfy. :)

I love the large basket for th coffee table. You could put extra blankets in there - or magazines - or books .... all kinds of stuff!
No, I do not think of Kathysue as rustic, but these things are gorgeous and have such a homey feel to them.
Have a pretty day!

Any of these might add a certain something to just the right spot. I always think of baskets as belonging in almost any decor.(-:

Girlfriend, You are preaching to the choir here. I absolutely love all three of these elements. I think I have rustic bones. I had to borrow your image of the old jars, fabulous sink, ferns etc. Love it. all of it. I do have to say that I chuckled a bit at your title...Kathysue Goes Rustic. You are so refined. And so dear , I might add.

I like the pots, KathySue. They will be a good addition to your home. I love the colors too. I have a few in our family room and a basket where I keep extra towels in the bathroom that has access to the pool....Christine

This is a great post! I don't consider myself too much of a rustic girl either, but every time I see images like the ones you've posted, I'm drawn to the history and patina that they have. There's such comfort and warmth to an old collection of pieces, and it adds great personality to a space. I do love the mix of rustic and modern though, so maybe I'll start there as I incorporate some new pieces into my home. Thanks again!

I think that yellow, green with a touch of purple around wonderful and happy feeling together. I always decorate in colors of three and one accent. so I think I would find a splash of red too. Sounds crazy, but try it. It's yummy together.

Shelley

Well I love all of the things you've described too and I don't consider myself rustic either *winks* Just found an antique wicker french trunk and I have no idea where I'm gonna put it? But I really believe that if you buy things you love they'll work out somehow....I'm holding tight to that girlfriend! So go ahead buy a confit pot! Lol! Vanna

Kathysue, We must be twins seperated at birth! I love everything you have shown and have a few of the same images saved in my inspiration file. I have also been on the search for two large baskets to use as end tables. Hobby Lobby has a large one you may like that is perfect for a coffee table.

Sherry
